This is not good... was reading over on the Oil forum, and seeing copper in the oil is not a good sign. Motor has 30k on it. Was in police service for the first 8000 miles.
I am wondering if the motor is self destructing and I don't know it. According to what I was reading, my crank runout is excessive, and is eating up parts in the cam chest. Now I am expecting to find all kids of horrors in there when I open it up. Actually, I am thinking about trying to get the exhaust off and pull the cam cover next weekend.
Not a bad idea to look in the cam chest. Pull the cam plate and check run-out while your there.
As far as the copper color shavings. The only places you can get that in your 04 engine is the pinion support bushing on the cam plate and the rocker arm bushings.
I had the same kind of noise on my Dyna WG. Thought that the IPB was going again. It ended up being the bolt that holds the front engine guard had snapped. Drove me nuts trying to find it since it only vibrated at a particular RPM and in any gear. Look around to make sure all your bags and other accessories are not taking you on a "hunting trip" for you issue.
I can gaurantee it's not the engine gaurd. I removed it for a few days while I was waiting for a replacement, and still had the noise. Me, a HD tech and a HD Service Manager spent about 30 minutes going over the bike looking for the source of the noise. Finally, the tech broke out a stethoscope and found it was coming from the rocker boxes. More from the front than rear.
So this reduces me to valvetrain issues. However, reading about the pinion bushing, I am wondering if there is more hidden problems then I am wanting to find...
Neonhomer, those copper colored flecks you see could be just be particles from the cam chain tensioners. The cam chain tensioners are a rusty brown color and could be mistaken for copper in the oil due to the sheen of the oil on the plastic.
Just a thought there! I see this in my oil too at times. Might want to check the tensioners.
Maybe... if you've read my other post, I am going to be replacing my cams with a set of Andrews 21's or 26's.. and either a gear drive setup or a hyd tensioner setup.
I've been fighting a top end noise in my engine since I bought the bike a year & a half ago. The noise has gotten progressively worse and worse since I bought the bike.
I just don't understand how the motor can be quiet under 2200 RPM, and be noisier than hell above 2300 RPM.
