Default welding crank????

hello im building a 2009 elctra glide, i dropped off the bike this morning and was going to install 103, hq 575 cams 10.1 flat tops, stage ii head job bigger intake exhaust valve bassani RR, when im leaving my builder suggets i true and weld my crank hell send it to darkhorse... this suck i dont have an extra 1000.00, he also said the timkin upgrade should be done. my bike has only 400 miles and the run out is .0045 so well in spec, but he thinks it wont hold up to the 110 hp 115 tq (wishful thinking). When i start the build i was staying small so i could stay out of the lower end. now maybe i should do a 117 or a 124??? how much more would really be im already there. And as far as the crank goes he seen sissored flywheels on a stock bike so he recomends welding all cranks no matter what the power will be.???? what should i do i have to let him know by next week thanks.... depressed bagger owner

Definitely have the Darkhorse (Hoban Brothers) treatment on the crank; those guys can bring reduce your runout to .0001. They use the pro-plug but will weld if you want. It won't cost the much more to go bigger once you head down that path. Case boring will be required and Darkhorse can to that also. Have the dealer pull the lower end and send the whole unit to HB and let them disassemble, do the work and send it back ready to drop in the frame. They will need to know what pistons you will be using to balance the assembly.

"They will need to know what pistons you will be using to balance the assembly." This is something that I wondered about with these 103,106 and 107 builds, the crank is said to be "questionable" and putting in pistons that are not balanced for the crank just doesn't seem right. Does anybody know the weight difference from a stock piston and a 107?

Everything should be balanced as a rotating assembly, pistons and crank together.

It is cheap insurance to take care of the crankshaft now, rather than the expense of fixing it after it fails. Not even considering the downtime, the oil pump, timing and cyl./piston damage from a failed crank will cost way over $1000.00
