Ok guys I need some help here. I rebuilt the motor from top to bottom on my 89 flhtp, I had our Harley mechanic do the bottom end and I did the rest. Bike seems to be running great. I did the 30-60-30 break in and the added up the miles to 500 miles and changed the oil. Here's the problem when I start the bike from stone cold I get a snapping\cracking from the front cylinder. I originally thought it was from under the tank toward the coil area now today as I started it I could here the snapping and seemed to be worse when I used the enrichener, I took a look on the left side and noticed possibly some wetness stains on the top fin of the front jug, I think I got a head gasket leak.
Once the motor has been warmed up I don't get the snapping \cranking noise and the bike runs great. Question is does this sound like a head gasket leak? I torqued down the top end just as the James kit instructions say. I also noticed a drip ( yes a good drop ) of oil running down fromn the left front corner of the front jug when I had it out on the hiway the other day as well. I toqued just as the James instructions say so is it possible I need to pull the rocker covers and do a re-torque? Is there a sure way of detecting a head gasket leak?
