There are no consequences to splitting the cases per se. You would "split the cases" to add a larger crank. You can make a motor a stroker motor this way. In fact it's the only way to stroke a motor. Stroking a motor means the pitons travel up and down further inside their cylinders. By stroking a motor you will gain displacement ( more cubic inches). You can also gain displacement by boring it. Boring a motor gives it bigger pistons but they do not travel any further up and down inside their cylinders. So, you can gain displacement by either stroking (which you must split the cases to do) or by boring and putting in bigger pistons. Or, you can stroke and bore.
Why would you need to bore a case? To install a larger crank?
Thanks
Cases are bored to accept larger cylinders to increase the swept volume of the powerplant.
We use Axtell cylinders of the 3 13/16" bore diameter for Shovels, Evo's or Evo XL's, and T/C's to go to 107" (4 1/8" bore) on the 4" stroke years, or 117" on the 4 3/8" stroke models.
When building 124"s either Axtell or S&S offers cylinders to accommodate that, with the use of a 4 5/8" stroke crank assembly.
Any/all is not hard if you are tooled up for it.
