Default Rocker Box Torque Question...

After searching these forums up and down, I am a bit confused.

I have my '01 Service manual. The torque values are listed in a table.

When replacing my rocker gaskets I found it a bit wierd that there is nothing in the manual about a tightening sequence or the values of each bolt which everyone says is very important.

In section 1-13 of the service manual there is a chart that shows a diagram of the fastner head, then its type, max tensile strength, material and then torque in IN LBS only.

For instance, the 4 main rocker bolts on the lower rocker cover are black 1/2" heads that are 2 1/2" long and have 6 / (slash) marks on the head.

This would indicate by the chart that this is an SAE 8 Steel bolt made of Medium Carbon Alloy. According to the chart, these being 1/2" bolts should be tightened to 119in lbs. Is this correct? Because some of the documents that I have found on these forums specify 130-150 in lbs and say that 2 of these bolts are 2 1/2" and 2 are 2 1/4". All four of mine are the same exact length.

I just wondered if anyone knows whether or not I am reading this chart right.. Dont want to get 50 miles out and find out that I really hosed this up.

There are also 3 shorter bolts are silver/steel with 7/16" heads on them and 6 slash marks with triangle. By the chart these should be tightened to 78 in lbs.

Any insight here would be a great help. THanks!!

If I remember right the 1/2" head bolts are torqued to 15 to 18 ft lbs. the 7/16" head bolts are torqued to something like 75 or 78 inch lbs.

Now after doing some serious hunting on the net for SAE Torque charts I see that these charts are specific to bolt diameter and NOT head diameter. For example for a 1/4" bolt, you would use a 7/16" wrench. Thus the torque spec for a grade 8 1/4" bolt would be 12 FT Lbs. Welcome to the land of confusion... When in doubt, call my mechanic I guess.

Looks like I needed to read the manual more.. I finally found it in the rebuild section. I was hoplessly lost in the tear down section and totally skimmed over the torque settings. The 4 larger bolts are 15 - 18 FT lbs, The 3 smaller steel bolts are 10 - 13 FT lbs and the 2 hex head bolts are 90-120 IN lbs. And finally the 4 rocker box cover hex head bolts are 10 - 13 FT lbs. Hope this helps anyone who may have been as confused as I was. ;-) Thanks for the help guys as always!
