Default Torque values

I have the rocker assemblies off my 1988 FLHS to install Rocker Lockers and can't for the life of me find the torque values for the various rocker bolts in the Factory service manual. The front of the manual has torque specs for various size bolts and grades of hardware but no specific info. By the markings on the bolt heads they look ( the larger 5/16 bolts , 4 EA to be Grade 8 ) they should be torqued to 29 FT LBS according to this schedule. Is this correct? This isn't the first time I've found errors or omissions in this FSM, they also say to use only 1 pint of oil in the trans among other things. Thanks MIke

After install and a thorough warm up I took it for a ride, combined freeway, city and backroads and I'd have to say worth it. There is still some related valve train noise but I chalk that up to a high lift cam and roller rockers, but still significantly quieter and more consistent with the noise there is. The temperature during the ride was near 90 degrees with about 68% humidity. This type of weather the engine is usually much more noisy so I will say mission accomplished, they work. One thing I did notice in my assembly was the Jim's roller rockers and SE heads I'm using the rocker shafts were somewhat tight in the bores and there were no witness marks on any of the bolts.

Good to read. Do you have to remove the whole rocker box, or is one bold per rocker enough?

For those that are looking for future reference..

I Know you said you found this just don't want other to be mislead because they didn't read the entire thread...

29 ft lbs on the 5/16" rocker bolts is sure to stretch the threads in your aluminum heads..... Be aware.....

If I'm understanding your question.... you need to have all pressure off of the rocker shafts so they can shift/rotate when you install the inserts. The rocker box may also be installed too close to the bolts & need to move a little too.

Thanks for the info

Yeah, the underlying question was actually, "do I need to renew the rocker box gaskets". Because I have to lift the box from the gaskets and re-center them, I'll break contact and have to renew them as well, or at least I will.
