103" bag 'O' marbles
Pro help need please
I have just gone fron a 88" stock to a 103" build on an '03 fatboy and the excessive noise is driving me nuts.
At start up everything is solid and quiet; on the interstate it has excellent power and quiet throughout the entire range.
It's after it has heated up and at idle at the light that the noise drives me nuts(Oil tank is so hot you can't touch it).It sounds like it is between the lower case and valve train on the left side only and is insanely loud.
Sounds like a ratcheting bag of marbles(couldn't describe it better lol).
I have listened to several other builds and i know they can be rather loud, but this is ridiculous.
Being the novice to mediocre mechanic that i am any and all input on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the build:
4 3/8 SE stroker
Flattops
Fueling reaper 574 cams
Fueling solid cam gears
HD b lifters
Fueling pump
HD adjustable pushrods
SE camplate
Beehive springs
10 litre heads and induction (Ken Weber) port polish blah blah blah
biggie valves
Hooker step tuned exhaust - baffled
new shoe on primary chain
SE Pro tuner
Mobile 1 Syn 3 20/50
Thanks Guys,
Slider

improperly adjusted pushrods?
valve spring retainers making contact with rocker box cover?
lifters leaking down?
sumping?
You didn't mention oil pressure: how is it? Where exactly is "between the lower case and the valve train on the left side"?
What is the piston to cylinder clearance?
How hot does the oil get?
You could be dealing with more than one issue.
I barely touch with the back of my knuckles and then say, yep all warmed up. 200-220 degrees is HOT to the touch.
I am in the camp that says the stock type lifters are not designed good enough for even stock HD engines. Why I run Woods after chasing noise for two years just like that.
My sound, using a long bladed screwdriver to track down, was at the top end. But it was the lifters causing all the top end rattleing .

King, I'm running mobile 1 syn 3 20-50
Doesn't sound like lifters but wanting to change to woods anyhoo
have done a comparison with the riders I'm with and my oil tank is sizzling
will check all fluid temps and get back to you
DJL, no contacts with springs on rocker boxes
good on the pushrods and no sumping
I will open it up and check cam gear lash

Untill I change to Woods lifters I had bought 4 Qts of Redline 20-60. Still think about it now and then, at least for the rest of the Summer. Just out of curiosity, cause things are nice now..
