So I'm out on the scooter yesterday afternoon enjoying the 80 degree weather and the longest day of the year, when 45 minutes into my ride, my engine just stalls for no reason as I'm down shifting to a stop light. I try turning the motor over and it fires up, but quickly stalls again. Luckily, a guy in a truck sees me having problems and he pulls over and offers to load my scooter in the bed. Another motorist pulls over and helps us load it......pretty embarassing as rush-hour traffic decided to slow down and watch.
We both noticed that the bike seemed to be burning a lot of fuel, since it smelled like gas. He told me the float was probably stuck open and it flooded the motor. So we get the bike home, into the garage, and it fires right up!!!! I take it around the block, and it runs fine. A few hours later, the bike fires up again, no problem.
WTF!?!?!?! Are these temperamental bikes or what! Do the floats in the CV carbs have a habit of sticking open? What do you guys think?
hey did it sit all winter........there could be some garbage floating around in the tank that caused the bike to flood, or the float bowls to stick..........i would drain the tank and flush it out if it keeps up
It sure sounds like ***** said, junk in the tank causing the float to hang open, you can drop the float bowl with 4 screws and have a look in there. If you find any sediment at all, remove the tank and clean/flush it out and put new gas in it. You might want to drop the float off and clean out the needle and seat by opening the petcock with the new gas in the tank and wasting a bit of gas through the line/needle and seat into a cup to flush out the line , then reassemble it.
When I bought it, the previous owner told me it sat for about six months.....so I'm starting to think that's the problem....some garbage floating around in there....thanks for the info fellas!
TCSTD, before I remove the float bowl, do I need to shut off the fuel line at all? Also, is the reserve tank valve seperate from the main fuel valve? It hasn't been run in the reserve position for a long time, I think that's why I got stranded last time when no fuel was making it through the reserve valve.
Yes, shut it off or you will get the gas all over, unless you have the vacuum petcock
The reserve feeds from the same place as the regular does, however the reserve will empty the tank as the regular feeds about an inch or so higher in the tank through the filter from the same source.
You should drain the tank and remove the petcock to clean it out, now that I remember your last problem too.
Sitting for a time is not the whole problem, getting gas at a station that has dirty tanks IS.
Sounds good brother, thanks! I think I'll just buy a new petcock altogether....they don't cost much, and it will be a good time to do so since I'll be taking it off to clean it anyway. Should I also remove the fuel lines and flush them out as well?
Now if I don't do anything, will the junk that's floating around in there eventually pass through the combustion chamber and burn up, or if it's in there, is it in there for good?
Probably too big in size to get through the jets or it would be gone by now, remember that the low jet (46) I believe is .046 milimeters, that's rather small
