Default Low idle

When I first start my bike, a fuel injected 99 eg classic, the idle is about 1k. If I blip the throttle, it drops to 400 to 500 rpm and remains there untiil I ride for about 20 minutes. After that, it idles at 800 to 900 rpm and stays there. The bike doesn't stall, but it shouldn't idle that low and I'm concerned. Can anyone help?

Roll the throttle until you can see the cold idle set screw. Turn it in 1/4 turn and check your idle.

Also remove the air cleaner and clean the throttle body with an spray cleaner. Be sure to put the straw into the two holes at the top of each throat, these are the idle bleed holes.

This might not apply to a 99 but you said FI.
On later bikes I know the start idle is set higher at first. It will hold higher, longer, till the throddle is moved. I try not to move the throddle, at first, long as I can. Let things settle down first so to speak. but only maybe 30 sec or so.

Default Thanks ...

for the info. I can wait 5 minutes or more Gunny, but it doesn't matter. I'll try adjusting the cold idle.

It applies to all M/M injected bikes since 1995.

One other thing, pull the two fuses for a few minuets under the right side cover to allow the ECM to reset to the new setting.

On the end of the throttle shaft there is a plate that the IAC uses to control the idle speed. You can squirt some lube like WD40 on it and see if your idle speed improves. If it does then you may have the mini bearing in your plate needs replacing. You can find them at most any bearing supplier, and they're pretty cheap too. If the IAC senses any resistance it will back off and let your idle speed drop.
It's another thing to consider with thw MM systems. I had to change mine after it would keep losing the correct idle speed after I reset it several times.
