Default Time-Sert Inserts Any Good??

Guys,
This is my first thread here so please go easy on the newbie!

I have been in and out of the cam box on my 08 dyna several times now installing cams and the like and the 1/4-20 threaded holes for the cover and cam plate are showing signs of wear.

I'm thinking of redoing all of them with time-serts so i have steel on steel bolting surfaces.

Any opinions or experience good or bad would be greatly appreciated.

Time serts work very well, but i dont think i would do it in this case. i would only do them if completely necessary. i had to do one in the head of my bike for my exhaust bolt and it worked great. i have heard of people drilling crooked and then the time sert doesnt go in straight. i personally wouldnt take the chance of doing all of them if you still have a good bit of threads working in the holes.

Good point! I probably should make up a guide block before I go to town with the hand drill. Probably save me the cussing of a broken tap, too! 1/4-20 is pretty small and taps can break like glass!

I would run a thread restoring tap, not a new tap for cutting threads through all, or just the worst offenders and install a stud with some red loctite. Less work, no drilling issues and a final solution.

Thanks!

Your local NAPA store should have Heli-Coil Brand Repair Kits on the shelf.
Installed correctly, the'll work like a champ, and will actually be stronger than the parent material.
