I am changing cam chain tensioners in a 01 tc88 dyna. I have a stripped bolt hole on the #2 bolt hole for the cam plate. This is the one with a line up dowel. What is the best way to fix this. Do i need to get some heli coils or is there enough metal to drill out to a 5/16 thread bolt. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Don't go with bigger bolt. Heli-coil in my opinion. Permatex also makes a thread restorer that is similar to JBWeld. Used it on a water pump hole. Worked very well. As stated above BE CAREFUL. you don't wanna make a bigger mess. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
I did the same on my Evo...Had 3 stripped out bolt holes in the Cam Cover.
Bought the TimeSert system to replace them and have not had an issue since. Bloody handy as i have now gone through the bike and fixed up all the old 'suspect' holes as well; without a single issue. I like it!

Either way will work; have done both. If you go with a larger bolt, you will need to open up the hole in the cam plate as well. TimeSert's are great and more suited for holes with higher torque fasteners like head studs; don't see how a TimeSert will work at a dowel location though. Getting the helicoil tang out can be a PITA in a small hole. Use red Loctite to secure the helicoil and let it cure before torquing the bolt. The only negative issue with helicoils is that they can and have come out with the bolt.
Another option might be a longer fastener. Usually in a blind hole, the fastener uses about 1/2 the threads. A longer bolt might catch enough of the deeper threads to hold. You just need to measure to see how much thread depth remains and if the hole is deep enough for a longer fastener. I have used longer fasteners in lieu of restoring threads in the cylinder head thread bosses that secure the rocker supports; another location that is prone to thread pull out. As has been pointed out, it is a blind hole so just make sure the hole is clean and dry before torquing the fastener.
Sorry i have not re posted the progress. I did not have have chance to tackle this week but i got to it today. I used the helicoil and it worked just fine. I will button it up tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the input.
