fuel filter, 2002 fxsti

bought the wife a showroom codition 2002 softail standard, fuel injected.theguy said he didnt ride no more cause his riding partner died. well, evidently he let the bike set up, it cranked and run fine, but when i rode it homei noticed it has a bad miss at certain rpms. 30 mph in3rd, 40 in 4th etc. it misses at idle also, but accelerates fine. its real strong, has 88 motor with se stage one download and breather, has v&h straightshots. i run one tank with sta-bil injector cleaner & conditioner.i then drained the fuel tank thru a screened filter funnel, & got a few small flakes of somthing.filled tank with premium gas &used a 2 part fuel drier & injector cleaner recommended by dealers service mng. called bg or somthing. he says its good stuff. i noticed inside thetank filler hole in & under the hole i ran my finger &rag around the edge & got some more flakes out .my first ? is, is the fuel filter inside the tank under the fuel guage cap, & if so, how do you get it out to inspect & clean or replace ? any help here is greatly appreciated. my bro said to drain tank & clean out the inside of tank by using a flexible air nozzle. the gike runs pretty good cruising at 55 or 60, then it will cough a few times every now & then. im just wondering if i keep riding it & keep using the fuel additive if it will eventualy clear itself up? any of you experts got any suggestions? its a good looking bike & i got a really good deal on it, my wife loves it, now all she's got to do is take her riding coarse next week & hopefully learn to ride it. anyways, I need some expert advice and opinions. thanks in advance, you cn just pm me, please.
