I have an 05 Ultra Classic with the 95 big bore kit. I was out west on vacation when the engine started making some awkward noises during idle and shutdown. The bike seems to runs fine, but during idle (hot or cold) it makes a clanking kinda noise, you just know something is not right. Give it some throttle and the engine sounds fine. When you shut the enibine down it makes a noise that sound like the engine is dry on oil. Oil level is just fine. I just changed the oil before i left on vacation. It has me baffled because of the way it runs when you give it the throttle. Does not seem to have a miss or anything, it run's fine best i can tell. Just on idle and shutdown. Anyone got any ideas of what I need to be looking for ? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Was hoping for some suggestions for my problem. No response makes me think it could be something that is going to be costly. Come on folks, throw me a bone here. Give me some hope that it is going to be something simple...........
The engine has 38,500 miles on it. The clunking noise seems to be coming from the right side (brake pedal) while it is idling and the dragging noise at shutdown seems to come from the primary case area. That's what is throwing me off as well, I cannot clearly distinguish the exact area for the sounds.
The engine has 38,500 miles on it. The clunking noise seems to come from the right side of the engine whereas the dragging noise at shutdown seems to come from the left side down around the transmission/ primary area. it is really hard to pinpoint the exact area. Hope this helps, thanks.
Sounds like you may be losing your tensioners I wouldnt run it any more until I pulled the cam cover and checked them there is a thread on here with pictures on how to check them.
As already suggested, go into the cam chest, and check things out.
Don't forget to check for crank run out either.

What is exactly is crank run out ? I have never heard that term before. Thanks for all the info and ideas. Going to check the cam tensioners tomorrow. Hopefully it will be the cam tensioners and nothing more. The bike wasn't run but a few miles after the noise was detected. It had ran great all day, and gave no indication of any problems.
