You are misinterpreting. 32 threads per inch would mean 32 turns to get 1 inch of travel. Each turn would equal .0312 inches. .0312 times 3.2 equals .1 inches. This is the normal recommended preload. Most shops will tell you to go even deeper on the load like .140 to .150 as hillside stated. About 4.5 turns on a 32 thread per inch pushrod.

To back up a little
The normal Hydralic lifter Harley uses has about 0.200 inches of travel built into it.
The idea -normally-- is to get to the middle of this travel. Which from "just touching" to the bottom of the travel. Which is why you see 0.100 inch as a standard.
The reason folks talk about threads per inch a lot, is there are different threads per inch, depending on who makes the adjustable pushrod. So you have to know what you have first and go from there.

Sometime this is still too loose, as far as noise or rattle goes, and going a little deeper helps. In some cases.

Follow the instructions in the manual on how to do this.

If you do this yourself its a free thing to do.

If you have 32k miles on the lifters, as long as you are in the engine, change them out. Could be that you have a weak lifter and this is what is causing the noise, but adjustable pushrods will also help.
