Default head work

I'm trying to decide what heads to put on as this years winter upgrade. I have the St 2 kit now (95", 203 cams, SERT, SE Pro 2 slip-ons) 75hp, 92tq. I think about the SE heads and adjustable pushrods. Do I need to go with different pistons and if not should I do the rings while I in there? I only have about 3000 miles on the big bore kit and I hate the break-in time of the new rings.

Reworking your stock heads will perform better than SE Perf heads especially with the 203 cams. The SE perf heads would increase your compression a little to much for those cams. Also the SE perf heads have larger valves that can hurt you low end torque. IMO, they are more designed for top end HP that is practically useless on a big heavy bike.

Can I stay with my pistons that came in the St 2 kit; also do you think the clutch will handle the extra torque?

98HP & 104TQ with 16,000 miles and my stock clutch is working just fine.

Since you don't mention anything about changing cams, I would suggest talking to some of the shops that specialize in head work and explain your goals. It sounds like you just want to clean the heads up to optimize the rest of your build.

You can stay with the pistons you already have. You don't even need to disturb the pistons or cylinders to do the job. The clutch itself should be fine but may require a heavier clutch spring. Feel free to give Bean a call at the shop and discuss all the options, he is always happy to answer questions.
