OK Bill, now it’s time to disagree to agree!!! (hmmmm…. that didn’t come our right.)
My tach is extremely accurate and would even bet that it is as accurate as a sundial during a rainstorm at night!

see, I got it figured that idle must be above 0 and redline is below 8 so it must be accurate... you know, like on a sundial at night, you know it has to be between 12 am and 12 pm, I think so anyway, excpept on the second thursday of next week...

Take it to the dealer and ask them to throw a tach on it...(not a permanent one but one they use to tune the bike). See where it is now, and find out how they set it to start with. Sounds like you are going by feel or sound vice a reading from an instrument...worth a trip to the dealer for your peace of mind IMHO...

Mac
I was by an 04 1200R and the tach read 1000 and it was idling higher than mine. Although, his pipes sounded differently I would say based on that mine was idleing at 850 at worst 800. The thing that scared me was that when I had the idle adjusted (at a friend's house) he said it sounded like it was idleing at 500. That's super low and now I'm worried it might have been true. The oil pressure light didn't go on. If it was idling at 500 rpm would the oil light come on?

You're right. It would give me much more peace of mind. So I'm going to take it to the dealer. The only problem is that I will never know what it idled at before because the idle was increased. I could tune it down again and would know by ear where it was before. I think I'll consider putting on a tach permanently. Anybody know how easy that's to do? Do you just plug it in and mount it or do you have to mess with any wiring?

Btw, you said "find out how they set it to start with" would that be by ear or by some other method?

Just for reference, what would you say this bike is idling at?

Unless the bike idles for hours on end, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Most people let their bikes idle for a minute or two before riding it, after which idle is not an issue. I really wouldn't worry about this too much, HD engines are pretty bulletproof anymore and don't we all have enough things to worry about without one more?

My advice, ride it like it was rented, enjoy the ride and if anything goes wrong, fall back on the warranty.

DGlide04 has it right...unless it was idling for hours, I would think minimal damange...if any.

As for finding out where it was to start, I meant take it back to the guy that pulled it out of the crate and tuned it...did they tune it? Do they normally? I have no idea, but I would ask...not like a jerk, but more of a, "Hey, I'm kind of curious, and I want to make sure that I've got my bike right so that I'm not in here for any other reason than to spend money on parts and t-shirts, as opposed to waiting for warrantee work."

I wouldn't do anything to the bike, I would take it in, express your concerns and have them set it up on a digital tach.

If that doesn't work, bring your Sun dial in the middle of the night on the second Tuesday or whatever it was that TxMoores was talking about with that Sweeeeet ASSSS paint job of his

That sounds a bit low for my taste,.
But the question is if it's too low. Meaning it will cause some damage to your bottom end. My bike actually idled higher than that.

If you install a tach or have the dealer check it , then all would be OK and you could sleep better at night
