Default Low Idle Breakin

What are some bad things that can happen when your bike is idling low during breakin?

Especially if the RPM goes much below zero, then nothing happens...

What does that do damage to? Lower bearings? More wear on everything due to less oil? How low do you have to go to get into trouble? 850 rpm? 600rpm? 500rpm?

Being the normal idle is 950-1050 rpm's i would say if you go around 15-20% lower you are asking for trouble depending how much you idle the engine.

How low can you go ?

The reason why I ask is recently I had to dial up my idle because it was low. That's how it came from the dealership. [:@] I don't have a tach, so I'm not sure exactly how low it was, but now I'm worried. The engine hasn't exploded yet and it's still running, but I wonder what damage has been done especially since the bike broke in with that low idle. On a side note, I'm really starting to get ticked off at the dealership I bought the bike.

Take it to the dealer and ask them to throw a tach on it...(not a permanent one but one they use to tune the bike). See where it is now, and find out how they set it to start with. Sounds like you are going by feel or sound vice a reading from an instrument...worth a trip to the dealer for your peace of mind IMHO...

You might be amazed what is the actually idle RPM. My Night Train has a HD tach (all bikes should come with one!!) and mine idles right at 900 - 1000 rpm (depending how hot, altitude, etc.) and I had several guys tell me that it is idling too low... so we all went off to the HD shop, bet some cold beers and (drum roll) my tach was right... ummmm.... cold beer... especially tasty when won...

The tachs on these bikes are not extremely accurate, they could be off as much as 50 rpm when compared to the digital tech the dealers use, not uncommon at all.
