Default Where's reserve?

I was riding today when the engine started running rough the way it does when it's about to run out of gas and before I could switch over to reserve it ran out of gas. So I put it on reserve and started her up again and went on my way. Here's the only problem. She was running now, but still kind of rough. When I got to the gas station about .1 miles away the bike wasn't running right. I filled the gas tank up and only 3 gallons fit. I have a 4.5 gallon tank. So that means 1.5 of them are in reserve (books says 1 gallon).

Here's my question. What's the deal? Why was the bike still running rough when it still had fuel? Did it need time for the gas to build up? Or is there something I should be concerned with? The owner's manual says 1 gallon fits in the reserve, but my bike gets there around 1.5 gallons.

Sounds like you ran into the old 'suck the trash off the bottom of the tank' syndrome... A lot of folks (me included) will recommend that periodically you switch your petcock over to 'reserve' during some highway riding just to keep the trash flushed out...

That's what I was planning on doing today. I was going to run it on reserve to get the gunk out, but it ran so choppy that I just had to fill her up.

I typically do the 'reserve flush' after I have filled and the bike has sat for a little while to give the gunk a chance to setttle back down. That way when you do switch it to reserve and if it does begin to run too rough, you can switch it back over to good gas for a little bit and then back to reserve.

I think I would rather remove and flush out the tank maybe once a year than flush it into the system with reserve, it can't possibly help you out doing it this way, only cause problems. Most all bikes accumulate some gunk in the tanks from the stations, your best bet is to remove it from the system from time to time.
