Default Lifter testing

Anyone know how to 'test' a hydraulic lifter/tappet?
My friends bike is acting strange after his adjustment of the lifters, so we're thinking about checking the lifters and replace those that are bad. He has a box of supposedly unused lifters, but I want to check each before installing them.
Any advice on how to test them?

Possibility that he may be going thru the adjustment sequence, incorrectly?
Happy to help out in that department, if you'd like to give us a call.
