I did the same thing last fall. It was a bad move. I had the same effects as you ended up with. The torque I lost was mind boggling. I bought some professionally altered stock mufflers and didn't like the sound so I started looking on ebay. I bought some new aftermarket fishtails for $125 and some 2" baffles for $7.50. I opened the baffles up to get the sound I wanted and I couldn't be happier. I got my hp and torque back and my mileage improved. Because I'm a cheap bastard I couldn't justify spending huge money on mufflers I might not like the sound of anyway so it was entirely experimental and it worked to my favor.

Yeah. The engine generally needs some back pressure. And removing the baffles eliminates that an bottom end torque will suffer. Also it's my understanding that touring models with long gutted exhaust are difficult to tune. I called the tech at V&H. And they said their slip on mufflers which i have, flow much better than stock and they would not reccomend removing the baffles
