Heavy load and poor fuel will = ping, but your system has a sensor that will back the timing down to correct for that. HMMMM It should have pinged and then stopped, not contuine to ping. A quick look on a digital tech will help out, if the fuel does not fix it??

I would say the altitude has a lot to do with it pinging. I noticed a few years ago that when I stopped in the Kentucky mountains that they sold 85 octane gas there. I asked about this and was told that if you stayed in the mountains, that you could use the lower octane and your valves wouldn't clatter. I would think that your EFI has built in compensation for altitude and the 91 octane made your bike start pinging. By all means fill up again with some 93 0ctane, and see if the pinging goes away.

I experienced some pinging this past week, and finally figured out that the gas I have been purchasing at a local off-brand station was not 92 0ctane as shown on the pump. Needless to say, I will not be filling up there any more unless it's an emergency. I filled up at a Shell station today with 93 octane and I already notice a big difference. Don't skimp on the quality of your gas! You don't know what you'll be buying.

ALTITUDE ALTITUDE!!!!!
I lived in Laramie Wyoming for a year and I know for a fact altitude will do this. Generally you need to adjust timing 1 degree for every 1000 feet of altitude. Carburated motors are also way to rich. Vehicles set for normal flat land run like crap in the mountains. Some vehicles will compensate some by the computor for elevation, but usually not enough. How did it run at lower levels? You would be surprised at how many small planes "went down" at the high altitudes also due to not being set up for the elevations. One positive thing was my wife couldn't burn dinner as easy due to the thinner air.[sm=trust_me.gif]

I don't ride double, but I have taken my Harley with efi from roughly 2000' to over 5000' without any problems. A friend of mine has a Shell station and most of the time I use premium from his station. When I have gone on the road I have only stopped at good stations and bought premium. My bike is an 05, but it funs great so far at any alltitude. Hope that you can get your problem solved, you have been given some good advice. Good luck

I think when you get the bike home, that fat/denser Fla. air will fix it up. It's just homesick.
