I just returned from a trip. I live in florida and had shipped the bike to Denver. We rode from denver all the way to Las Vegas. Before i left i had the 5000 mile service performed on the bike, and then the bike was picked up immediately after. WHen i started riding in co. i notice the bike had a bad ping. Granted i couldn't find any 93 octane out there it was all 91. however, i also noticed that my fuel economy went up 40 -45 miles per tank. Do you think my dealer screwed up the efi or was it just the gas and altitude change for my bike. My baby is due home here to fla. in a day or two. should i have the dealer check the efi settings or just pick it up and try the 93 octane first?
I would try some different gas first, could be the gas you got with a different additive, maybe too much ethanol? Did it start after a fill up, possibly the altitude too.
i didnt have any starting problems, just a nasty ping...through a 5 gears...the only reason i question the 5000 mile service is i went from a low fuel light going on at 160 miles to about 200
Well if it is pinging very badly there can be other reason than octane. You did not give anyinfo about your ride. SO a a/f ratio that is very lean will do this, ie intake leak?? You did not mention any engine light. 99% of the time if it pings hard you will set a mis fire code. Any more info to give?? Stock bikes will run on 87 and yes they will ping but only when you first take off or load the engine in a tall gear . But you are saying it does it all the way through?? Check for codes, first, check for a intake leak, the Delphi system will run with no intake gaskets at all[:-]. I have tried it funny the system can handle huge air leaks. We drilled a 1/4 hle in back of a intake same thing you could hear it leak but the bike ran almost normal, other than a bit of ping under load.
one thing you just said raised an eyebrow....this was the first time my wife and i went on a long trip...the bike not only had both of us but was also loaded down with both bags, the tour pack and a duffle on top...could the increased load have caused this.....there were no engine lights that came on. and it is an 04 flthcse w/efi
i very rarely lug my engine but on the mountain roads in the rockies my wife was so nervous she was squeezing the crap out of me so i was lugging a little....she even asked me to slow down at one point and i told her if i slow down any more she could get off and walk next to me.....lol[8D]
