Oil Carry Over - But not from Breathers?
S&S Flywheel (welded), Timkin Bearing Upgrade, Feuling Oil Pump and Cam Plate, Kuryakin Mach 2 air cleaner, V&H ProPipes.
I've done a leak down test & both cylinders are fine. I checked for wet sumping and the case had less than an ounce of oil in it 30 seconds after shut down. I run it 1/2 qt low (or lower) on oil. I've switched to conventional oil. I've tried thickening the oil with Lucas Stabilizer. I installed an oil cooler to keep the oil from getting super thin under the high heat this summer.
I still get heavy carry over when running hard, and I tend to run hard often.
Since I could not find any major, system failures I went about routing the carry over oil mist from the breathers to the atmosphere at the rear of the bike to deal with the mess.
I do not seem to have any leaks in my hoses running from the breather bolts to a T then through the cylinders and then back along the frame. It is apparent that a fair amount of oil mist exits the rear of the bike as my ***-end is very dirty after coming back from Sturgis.
I seem to be routing all of the breather born carry over oil mist away from the engine, but I still get a minor amount of oil that seems to be coming down from the air cleaner onto the cam chest and back onto the saddle bag. The oil does not smell like gasoline (even when fresh); I thought it might be reversion. I can't find anywhere it seems to be leaking from and it seems to be coming from the air cleaner. The outside of the air cleaner has an oil glaze on the bottom and rear, but not the top, front or backing plate.
I don't know what to do about the main carry over issue other than route it as best as possible, but I'm very open to and hopeful for suggestions.
Also, I am at a loss as to the source of this mystery oil mist coming, not from the breathers, but from the air cleaner. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
