i wanted mine louder....i wanted performance...i wanted it to hit hard with each revolution and be crackly and aggressive...i like it...my friends say its cool...my bitchy neighbors hate it
No loud pipes here. I had the SE A/C, with SE slip-on, carb jetted. Was getting 33mpg. Installed the SE 2 into 1 pipe, along with a Hypercharger and stinger trapdoor. Dropped to 26mpg. Adding the 510g's next week and a SE 44mm carb. Will do the dyno afterwards.
Perceived sound is too subjective to really quantify, one person's quiet is another person's headache. Lots of variables in this entire equation, it'll take some diligent research on your part to filter through what makes sense for your riding style and intended outcome.
Opening up the intakes adds more sound up front where you sit. Turn out or turn down tips can direct sound away from the rider as well. Running across open desert 'sounds' a lot different than sitting in your garage on Sunday morning. Idling on asphalt will sound a bit different than hammering it across a concrete slab. So many variables to consider.
For truly stock db levels, you can't beat stock mufflers. The latest HD stuff keeps db increase within EPA specs as well. You may want to consider simply adding a PC-III to begin with, seeing what that does for you to smooth out the stock fuel curve, next going to a true dual header design with stock mufflers and seeing how you like that and finally swapping out for some mufflers with small baffles is you are looking for more flow. Take it in stages, no reason to change a bunch of stuff all at once.
As far as fuel economy goes, it's the price you pay for making HP. More air/fuel in, the more power comes out.....
I Like my Pipes loud. There are many gas saving accelerating horsepower loud pipes out there to choose from. I just don't want the Old Bitch/Bastard in the other lane switching over and saying well I didn't hear him coming. 3/4 Helmets make OK ear protection. I can see your point about screaming back and forth, I would hate to get a June bug or something in my mouth.
