Solving Vacuum leaks
I hear and read alot of people talking about vacuum leaks. Things like "oh could be a simple Vacuum leak" and so on. None of them talk about how to fix the offending leak. I have a 2002 Sportster 1200C I have a leak where the carb meets the manifold. I have had it apart repetedly. I have replaced the seal. I use the carb cleaner trick to spray it in the area and it still indicates a leak. How the hell do I fix it. The carb is seated nicely, the seal in new. I do not know what to do.

First off very sledom have I seen a intake boot leak. But manifold seals all the time. You have to be careful with a substance that will burn. It can be sucking it in through the air cleaner in a fume or vapor form and tricking you Try a spray bottle of water and spray it at the junction of the head and manifold that is where they leak. They if leaking swap the seals, and apply a small amount of dishsoap on the seal to help the seal from sticking ans you postion the manifold. The soap will allow you to move the intake up and down with out damage to the seal. Most common cause of the seals leaking is removal of Ait cleaner backing plate as there is no support and the seal become displaced just enough to suck air. Check you vaccum lines as well, the plastic portion is prone to cracking.
