Well I need to know from some experts here, -- this summer I had a few problems with starting my '08 dyna fatbob / stageII 103" upgrade SE 255 cams P-vision tuner arlen ness B/S and supermeg (8 discs open end cap). To skip all the gory details i will just state that I changed my battery in mid june, then the starter clutch went in mid july. Then the starter went like 10 days later so the dealer cut me a sweet deal on the starter. 10 days after that my stator goes and she won't start now because the battery is low. Boom get that fixed and tonite which is my first or second ride since getting it back I run it on the freeway for about half an hour at 90 + miles an hour ,when there's no cars around me of course, stop in at a place to get a number from someone 1 minute max, go to start the bike and it turns and then just locks, release the switch try again it turns 3/4 of a crank and locks, third try it starts. Now I have heard these 103's sometimes have trouble starting when hot because HD has been installing the same starter since the 88" engines and is now becoming inadequate, but not intolerable. + I don't have compression release valves.
So the question is does my problem sound normal to anyone given my entire chargeing and starting system is new? And If it is kinda normal and I have work done to my heads this winter, including acrv's will that solve the problem?
To answer your question, I have an S&S 107" in my old Evo and have happily run the original 1990 starter motor for five years now. My engine does have ACRs and they will significantly ease starting your bike. The starter has finally turned its toes up, so I am about to install a more powerful one.
Your TC has a more powerful starter than my Evo, so that is one thing you can consider. Yours is probably 1.4kW and they are available up to 2.4kW, with 1.7kW and 2.0kW in between.
However before doing anything, do talk to your dealer. It sounds as if they considered what they did for you should work fine, so if something has gone wrong, at least go through things with them first.
Harley make stock 103s, so the dealer should have experience of them and starting yours shouldn't be a problem. Fitting ACRs ain't cheap!
Thanks man, their eldest tek said they were haveing more and more starter troubles that's why I perhaps imagined the origins of my problem. I do want to have the heads ported and polished this winter / different cams and that will be a perfect time to get acr's. I wouldn't get just the acr's, however a HD starter is ove 5 bills here in .ca
My closed end cap works fine with 18 to 22 discs, but no power after 65 % throttle, I'm installing autotune this week-end and hoping that will fix things up for me. I love it loud, but the cops love me loud for their pockets! An it's not just them,I need it quieter in the city so I don't scare so many peoples!
My bike is carb and I had the Supermeg installed and bike dyno tuned by my S&S chap. Gives just over 100HP, so I would hope when your fuelling is right yours should be off like a rocket!
