Default 103" with starter issues.

Is it safe to say the stock starter is not going to last long if you put a 103" kit in?
My bike seems to be having a hard time starting, although it just sounds like it's miss firing, it could be the starter is getting weak and it's just not rolling it over fast enough.
Anyone have any experience with this?

I have a 103 with 255 cams in my RG and also had starting issues until I had it properly tuned. A good tune with the timing set correctly should fix you. God luck!

I also have a 103 with 255 cams, and the only thing that fixed my starter problem was the installation of a SE compensator. No more issues.

my 08 was bad for this. I ended up putting in a Cyclone starter that was stronger than the stock starter. That fixed the problem of the motor kicking back and sounding like the thing was coming apart! I put compression releases in this new bike, but I haven't had to use them yet. (Still cold here)

I discovered that some people have a little trouble with this build and their starter not being strong enough and some don't. I was just one of the lucky ones I guess.....

I had problem with mine and I went back to the dealer and he changed to add more fuel during cranking in the PCV and now she starts just fine

After my 103 build with 255 cams I had hot starting problems. After I went through a starter clutch I put in the SE Hi Torque starter, SE Compensator and Manual Compression Releases. So far so good.

I went through three starter clutches with my 103"/SE255 build. Finally installed the high torque starter, SE compensator, and automatic compression releases. Everything but the ACRs were covered under warranty with me paying the price difference from stock parts. It is like a different bike now.

I have '07 Ultra with 103 Stage II and 255 cams. After many months of dealing with hot starts problems and talking to lots of people, several dealers and researching several forums, I did the following:
1) SE Comp. install.
2) Adjusted Cranking Fuel Table in SERT.
3) HD Hi Torque starter install.

It appears that each bike is a little different. On my bike, I found that after installing the SE Comp. and adjusting the Cranking Fuel Table values (lower the values in the higher temperature ranges) the engine starts instantly when really hot. Starter bang and kickback is gone. I also installed the HD Hi Torque starter as I figured my stock starter took a beating for over 11,000 miles of short trip hot starts. As a note, with the SE Comp. and Cranking Fuel Table adjustment the engine started fine with stock starter. Just took the precaution to replace, so no problems on the road.

If I had to do it over again, I would have installed CRs when I did the build as a precaution.

Just to add, I also added fuel to the cranking cells in the map and backed off the timing as much as recommended. I still had to put in the starter. My biggest mistake was not putting compression releases in when I had the build done. Dealer talked me out of that and the heavier clutch spring. So..it kicked back and the clutch slipped which showed up on the dyno run. That dealer is now out of business.

Probably no coincidence....
