I had problem with mine and I went back to the dealer and he changed to add more fuel during cranking in the PCV and now she starts just fine
What values did you use, and is it based on time or temperature? Have you are anyone else tried retarding the timing at 500rpm to ease cranking pressure?
I have a 103 with 55K on it, stock starter & no problems, it depends on the cam you're using as that has a big effect on cranking pressure. That being said I'm running a Crane 290, very similar to SE 251, with 240 248 duration & still no problems, most of the problem can be solved in your tune, just need to keep the advance backed off at low rpms, such as when cranking it over.
Compression releases... My tunner recomended using them even with a good tune... The releases may cost $80.00 but you still have to have the heads tapped for them
As I have posted on many threads before, my starting issues continued even after a new starter was installed on the stock motor. It wasn't until I installed the SE compensator that the banging and kickback was illiminated. I knew I was going to do motor work eventually, so I wanted the SE comp before I did my 103" build. I also installed MCR's when I did the build. No issues now. It seems some have problems and some don't.
S.E. Compensator, that'll fix your problem. Don't waste the money on the other things, just try the compensator first and see if it suits your needs. If not, then the compression releases would be my next purchase, but I feel sure you'll find the SE Compensator will fill the bill.
