Recently (500 miles ago) had my 09 SG transformed into a 103 (255 cams, jusgs, pistons). Very happy with the gain in power and pull however of late I have noticed that sometimes the starter switch will go dead and not work at all. It hasn't left me stranded yet (touch wood) but....is this related to the rebuild or something totally separate. When it happened last night, bike was hot and I just rolled it ahead a bit and it seemed to crank over and start. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.
I have this same upgrade on my '07 Ultraclassic. Stock starter, but added the SE compensator. You'll probably find in the end you will have to do the same, whether you add a heavier starter or not. Do the search for SE Compensator and you'll find lots of theads with info about it...PACO
check your starter wire where it conects to the starter.
I had the same problem so i bought the hd heavy duty
starter, while i was changing out the starter I pulled on the
terminal where it conects to the starter and it broke off.
I put a terminal for a rideing lawn mower on it, that i got
from the local hardware store and went ahead and put on
the heavy duty starter. Just for grins i took the old starter
down to the parts house and had it checked out and it is
a good starter.
Believe it's the same starter on the 110" SE. With those mild cams and low compression the starter shouldn't be a problem.
Don't believe the LAPD switched from HD to BMW because of a battery issue. It may have a little to do with the BMW handles better, has far superior brakes, has more HP, is much faster, much more stable at high speeds, corners better, etc. etc...
I'm not knocking HD Police bikes, but you can't compare them to BMW...
