It's been nearly a month since I posted thi and I haven't had time to look at it until today. Meanwhile, my wife's bike showed up (we just move across country), so I decided to steal her "known good" coil and try it in mine. Fixed. THinking back on it, there have been times my bike cranked excessively on hot restart, it jst seemed to have lost some of its kick, mainly on startup: it usually "barks" right to life, but lately sort of lazily lights up on startup. So the more I thought about it, the more I thought the coil has been on its way out for a while. Sure enough, I put the coil in from my wife's bike, which is a few years newer (it's an '05 Superglide) and it runs like a champ. Even a little smoother at low rpm, part throttle operation, which has always been a little rough.
So, the next million dollar question is: Is there a performance coil that anyone thinks is a better piece than the stocker? Hard to beat the stocker, really, it gave 83,000 miles and 11 years of trouble free service. But if there's a better mousetrap out there I'll see about getting that instead...
