Just a quick update. Got my 2 3/4 inch x 5/16 grade 8 bolts today for rocker boxes. Had to go to a speciality fastner shop to find them. As I was getting ready to leave for work this afternoon ( 12 hr shift work at chem plant 4-4) my Dad called. Doing work in his shop. He's retired and since hunting season is over the more things he can find to do the less my mother can hunny do him. He got board and pulled the head off an checked the threads in question. They are fine. Still not sure why that bolt didn't act right. Maby lower rocker box cover gasket settling don't know. All I know is threads in head are ok and fell much better. Only have 1/2 day off till Monday as have to work OT and that is Wends working off nights going on days thurs. If any of you do 12hr shift you know what a b#%$# that is! Will up date as I can.
Today went like it should. Used the new 2 3/4 inch bolts on the tall rocker box bosses but cut an extra 4 rounds of threads to be sure it didn't shoulder out. Didn't think it would but didn't wont to take chances. Put small film never seaze on new cut threads since I removed plating cutting the new threads. Don't thank they even caught any threads but once again don't take chance galding if I remove in future.Blue locktight on bolt tip. With stock 2 1/2 inch bolts in both holes tall bosses cought 1/4 inch less threads. As promised you can see where I wraped valve springs with carboard to center lower rocker box cover and insure clearance. If I did'nt have to work Ot tomorrow think it would be on road tomorrow. Will start again Monday. Undersize pinion gear be in tomorrow!
Well I'm bumbed. I thought I would start her up today and ran out of time. My company has had a foot up my #$% 4 am to 4 pm the last 4 days in a level b suit and resperator breaking out 65% olium lines and I'm tired!! Started on bike at 7am this morning and things went well. Put on the undersize pinion gear and still would like alittle more lash but will do. You can see the cam gear move but no audable "click" on about 1 inch of travel on the cam gear. The rest of rotation a small "click". Didn't put runout gage to it as had borrowed it b4 and it would take 1 1/2 hr. to get it and back. Besides I'm at the point of doing it or go back with chains. Already have undersize gear on.Gears are not binding and roll clean. Clayed rocker tops just to be sure. All good. The rest of day spent adjusting push rods, carbing, pipes, tk ect. By 3pm was struggling to put speedo consol back on as trying to pack wires under there, clear my drag bars, gasket around spedo falling off. Started getting rattled and called it quits. Got to oil her, bolt down spedo and seat add gas and see what happens tomorrow. [/align]
Finnished build today. Turned engine over w/o plugs till oil light cleared and reinstalled plugs. Fired on second crank. Sounds great. No whine or lifter noise. Feels great to do your own build and hear it hit! Will dyno when I get 1000 miles.
92/96 I'm happy. OF course I have the VH Big shot staggard dip that I knew I would have. Do not like the look of 2:1 pipe on this ride . Have considered differant baffels as this is stock VH ones in it. Tuners said they wouldn't change anything as far as jetting. The best part is those numbers and I get 50 mpg at 70 mph 2up with bags for a week trip and air/fuel looks like this. They said motor needs more air and this build would benefitgreatly from a 45 mikuni which I will do this fall. Got Ark. HOG ralley in 3 weeks and SantaFe in July so with gas like it is will wait. Any comments or sugestions welcomed.
