I have an 07 fatboy and am planning a 103 high comp build.(10:5:1-11:1)Talk to Bob Woods and he immediately suggested the 408 grind.Anbody else using these cams and if so how noisy are they? I thought he might have suggested the 400 grind,but what do i know.And are all of his cams noisy? Thank you much Peace and prayers I am also open to any other cam suggestions for this build including chain drive which i would really prefer.[8D]
The 408 makes power if you are worried about noise I would say that you need to look at a S&S kit with 585 cams. The new kits are gear drive for the 06 dyna 07 everything and they work well . We are finishing up a 107 here with them along with a 2-1 fat cat with a DTT. I will have it running today. WE use plenty of woods cams some guys like the valve train noise.
I have run several different Woods cams, running the 400 right now, yes they are noisy but I haven't seen an high lift cams that were not noisy. Noise is part of life that comes with power, and Woods cams do make great power.
I do agree that the cam makes great power, from a builders standpoint we have to tell the customer that that type of cam will give you power but the offset of a agressive cam is noise with that type of cam. Other wise they get freaked out when the valve train is making the ticka ticka noise LOL There is nothing wrong with the cam unsderstand that, just realize that it is noisy and if that is a issue than I would look to make slightly less power, and with less noise as well. In the end for me I run a killer cam that makes huge power and is very quite a 640 S&S I have zero valve train noise and make big number with my 124. Head work well allow you to make larger numbers with a cam that is not so radical. Add the nasty stick and yes I could make a few more hp/tq but I like the fact that it is easy on the valve train, and still makes 159/163 on pump fuel in the AZ heat. I did try a few other cams in it and we saw better peak numbers, stonger tq curve one one cam ( 9f woods that thing hit very hard in in low end more so than it does now) but in the end the 640 was the best overall cam for all aound power and it is not noisy at all.
Choosing a cam is only one part of the build, ensure you have the head to work with the cam, correct compression ratio for the cam, correct valve train set up , will give you a happy running engine
I am running the TW400 cams, same lift, little less duration. on a 95" and they are noisy. But nothing you can't get used to. I wouldn't recomend the chain drive though. I don't think he makes the 408 in a chain drive anyway.
Also this cam is going to be very hard on your valvetrain. Now I am no cam GURU but I think you would want to seriously look at roller rockers, the forged rocker supports, the best lifters you can get, ( I like S&S ) and maybe even a billet cam support plate, like Delkron or Feuling.Just to keep it all together, you certainly don't want your new big motor to grenade.
Speed / Power is expensive.

BTW the 400 pulls real strong off the bottom, I had S&S 585's in and they were excellent from 3500 to the rev limiter but left a lot to be desired in the lower rpm's especially with a heavy bike.
we have a cam that is a custom groun 615/585 much like the 585 but works better over all. The 585 is a nice cam but is a bit soft you can either open the valve further or bump compression. It wroks well in the 10.8 range, same area the 615 does
HDWRENCH, I agree totally, except your not talking Aples to Aples, with the 124" you can get big nimbers with little effort, us little guys with the 103's might as well get useto the noise if we want good power, (Heavy on the good, well never see the great power your 124" will put out) I'm not pushing the Woods cams even thoe that's what I run, they are a little rough on the train.
Making power is the easy part, keeping it running takes a little effort making sure you have the parts that will handle your upgrades, it's not a simple as installing big cams, pipes, and some head work.
I ran the TW5G cams in my 95" RKC. After talking with Bob Woods, and describing what resulst I wanted, he suggested the gear drive cams, HTCC Heads and pistons and I threw in the Rinehart True Duals along with a few other goodies. Numbers: 102HP, 115ft lbs TQ and what a blast to ride. Yes, the cams were a bit noisy but nothing that I didnt get used to and I did put 40,000 miles on the bike with no problems.
Now have an 07 Ultra, and again worked with Bob Woods on the selections. Going to 103" with the TW-400-6 cams, CNC ported heads, 10.5:1 flattops, 50 mm throttle body, Rineharts (yes, I know they hurt the numbers just a bit, but love the sound and look) and some other HP parts. I fully expect valve train noise with a .650 lift cam, but am looking forward to the number once this combo is dialed in. I am expecting 115 HP and 125 TQ or close.
I have run Andrew, Sifton and S&S cams in the past, but for my money, nothing builds TQ like Woods Cams.
That's pretty much the same combo I'm running, except the pipes, and my numbers are 118/118
I added the 3.37 gears and a 6 speed gear set, what a blast to ride.
Well, already have the six speed cause its an 07. What exhaust you running? Actually, I may make a change already to the new S&S Trues duals with the stainles mufflers, but have not heard anything good, bad or otherwise on this set up.
Come spring, when I get this on the dynoI will post the numbers.
