How I salvaged rusty gas tank with old liner..
I really did not want to lose the paint job. Its custom and all the shops I called said it would have to be dipped.
1st) I put chains in the tank with MEK and let sit for 24 hours. randomly sloshing it around "hard"
2nd) I filtered out the MEK and "reused it" doing the same process for another 24 hours.
Now that I have disolved all the old peeling liner I used the Electrolytic method to remove the remaining rust. This method invovles filling the tanks with water and arm and hammer super wash detergent. Inserting a steel rod into the tank and literally shocking the **** out of it with a battery charger..... All the rust pulls from the walls and forms on the rod... Pretty cool actually. This process takes 24 to 48 hours.
Im currently on day 4 total.. the tanks look like fresh steel on the inside. But I decided to do 1 more soak in MEK to be sure... In 24 hours I will drain the tanks and let dry for a day or so. Then I will re-line the tanks with redkoat liner.
End result = saved my paint, gas tanks like new!
