Default SE Intake Manifold

I'm putting a new ignition system, carb, cam, and exhaust on my 98 EVO Wide Glide and I'm debating whether it's worth spending the extra cash on the SE intake manifold.

Is the SE any smoother than stock?

Should I just polish the stock HD manifold?

Any thoughts appreciated.

I doubt if doing either you would see any noticable performance gains on a mostly stock engine. If you were drag racing maybe it would shave a couple of 1000ths off your time. I wouldn't even bother to polish the inner bore I believe the roughness helps mix the fuel and air, polishing the outside might look cool if you get it to a mirror like polish.

Thanks for the reply. But I'm a bit confused (nope...doesn't take much). Wouldn't polishing the intake work like polishing the heads?

When they port and polish the heads, they reshape the combustion chamber and intake and exhaust valve ports. The intake port is rougher than the top of the combustion chamber and the exhaust port. There is a real science in getting the shape and the roughness to gradually taper to the smooth parts that make the flow of the heads more efficient and the fuel properly atomized. You may actually hurt the performance if you polish the intake manifold but I'm not an expert. You need to talk to an engine builder.

What you're saying does seem to make some sense. I've heard "too smooth" can have some negative effects...but what's too smooth?

Hey...any engine builders out there?

Thanks for the link. I can't believe they podercoat the combustion chamber! You would think they could easily mask it off!

Anyway...I asked him to post back here.

A rougher surface on the intake helps keep the fuel suspended in the intake charge. A rough surfaces creates turbulance on the surface of the intake and promotes better a better air/fuel mix. A smooth/polished surface allows the fuel to come out of suspension and form droplets. Droplets don't burn well.

Sanding the intake with 80-100 grit would give the effect mentioned above. Remove casting defects as well.

Ahh...without the turbulence along the surface of the manifold (created by a rougher finish), the fuel would have a tendency to stick to the walls leading to small build-ups of fuel...resulting in achange to the fuel to air ratio. Kinda like water between two smooth surfaces.

I have had an interesting experience with the screaming eagle intake manifold. I have a 2005 FLHRCI.The SE manifoldmade for the injected bikes has a D shaped outlet. I know this because one was installed on my Bike along with modified heads 95" pistons 510 cams and a race tuner true duals etc etc. I thought the bike ran fine untill I took it to a tuner and found I was getting little more than stoch hp and torq. The tuner was unable to get the bike to perform at the level expected from the build. Veryfrustrating.
Days later I went by the shop that assembled the engin upgrade . While I was their I saw a example of the modified head and saw the inlet was round. I recalled the manifold was D shaped and investigated further and read plainly the SE manifold for efi is specifically for the se htcc high torque head with a D shaped inlet. This se unit has been removed and a stock unit with a round outlet to corrrectly fit the head is being installed. Will be returning to the tuner for another session next week expecting better results this time.
I will personallybe paying close attention to anything being installed on my bike making sure the parts are compatible from this lesson on.
