Look for leaky cylinder base especially on the rear
Hopefully, the INA cam bearing has been changed to the Torrington bearing
These are really the only things of the EVO...they are great engines.
How serious is the leak on the rear. how much do they leak? is it a simple fix? Will you still be able to take it on a long trip without bringing extra oil?Is this motor a rubber mounted type? Thanks guys I cant find a cheaper bike than this one with all theoptions.
Well, not all do leak though. If it is leaking, it will be obvious though as it will make a drip. You could just let it drip and just check the oil often. There is a good fix for it with Haydens gaskets...they are the best I know of so far. The repair is not all that difficult and does not really require any special tools. If it is not leaking...don't worry. If leaking...just check oil.
EVO's do sometimes burn a little oil. If it burns any oil on the road and you must add...20w50 diesel rated, which is difficult to find. The next recommendation would be 15w40 diesel rated oil. I run 15w40 in the winter and 20w50 in the summer months.
It is rubber mounted...same old proven system dating back to the early 1980's.
I say that is not a bad deal at all. The EVO's last reguardless of mileage....
Looks like a nice bike.....it does have some extra stuff on it already. Grips and pipes are just two of them.
Considering I have 130,000 miles on my 1998 FLHTC...I paid somewhere around $12,000 for it. At the time, it had around 30,000 miles on it and that was in 2000.
I purchased the 1998 FLHTCUI with around 50,000 miles about a year ago. I paid around $11,000 for it as well. I didn't need this bike, but I wanted all the Ultra upgrades and the EFI system. I will eventually sell the Classic and keep the Ultra.
1998 was a good year IMO. It had the EVO and had the upgraded clutch in there. The only thing I have towards the EVO was the INA cam bearing that Harley put in there.
Thanks EVO you seem to have had great luck with yours do you do alot of two up with yours beacuse my wife and I almost always ride together. What type of milage do you get with the bike? how much matince do you do and how often? How long do the tires, belt ect. last thanks again

Most of the riding is twoup. My wife and I like to ride alot in the spring and summer...racking around 6,000-7,000 miles in those warm months. In the cooler months, I usually ride solo and only put around 3,000-5,000 miles on it.
On the classic, we usually get around 45-46mpg. The Ultra gets around 51-52mpg...gets better fuel economy with EFI. I consistently get about the same mpg twoup or riding solo.
As for maintenance....
20w50 for warm months
15w40 diesel oil for winter riding
15w40 in the primary-changed once a year
80w90 GL5 for transmission-once a year
Anthing from cables to pivotpoints get lubed around 5,000 miles or yearly
Sparkplugs 10,000 miles
If I notice something not right...I check it out then and do something about it.
I use Donlop D402 Police version tires. The front usually gets almost 20,000 miles on it and and rear gets about 12,000-15,000 miles on it.
The belt on my Classic has never been replaced...but it is on the verge to being replaced as it is showing some wear that I do not like. And after nine years and 130,000 miles...I don't mind replacing it.
