Just wanted to post an update. It was the coil and only cost me about $240 to have it replaced. Runs beautifully now and the weather is great...better yet, not too many bugs...yet!
Thanks everyone for your quick response, your expertise and your willingness to help me get back on the road. I wish you all the best - may the gremlins bother someone you don't like.
I had the same problem mid summer last year. I did find one side of my coil was bad. I took a multimeter and tested everything from the battery to the coil, I believe I found the problem! The bank sensor was statically grounding while the motor ran above idle. The normal vibration cracked the internal board inside the sensor. The bank sensor hot wire is in line with the ignition then runs to the coil. I suspect you may burn up another coil sometime, if you do tell the mechanic to check the bank sensor. Another suggestion, one the I did, was to install an aftermarket Ignition. HI-4 Crane Programable Ignition. It has a very basic ignition wiring diagram which bypasses the bank sensor. The Bank Sensor is a device designed to cut off your motor if the bike angle exceeds 90 degrees.
My 96 RK had a badattitude sensor.....aka bank sensor....As previously stated this is the sensor that senses when the bike goes horizontal (dumped) and cuts off the ignition circuit.....I would be puttin along just fine and the engine would just cut out.......scared the #@$% out of me cuz it would happen w/o warning and force me into the think fast get outa traffic mode.......The problem even perplexed an excellent mechanic because that sensor does not throw fault codes (at least not my bike)......and it only happened when the engine was warm......it got to the point that I was considering taking it to a priest for an exorcism!!!!.......My mechanic replaced it on a hunch after he eliminated all the other possible causes and that fixed it.
I have a 2003 1200cc Sportster and have the same problem. Taken it in to two shops with no results. Items that I've replaced include the following: fuel petcock, screamin' eagle intake, battery, 42mm mikuni carb, spark plugs, drained gas, regularly serviced, and ignitiontimingplate. When I replaced the timing plate, I did have about two months of successful riding. However, I'm back to sqaure one, which leads me to believe that there is a related problem elsewhere. I have a buddy with an extra coil and I'm going to give it a try. Does anyone have any suggestions on an upgraded coil and or ignition module? Thanks, Harley in NEEEEED!!
