Default 45 Valve Cover

I have an issue, hoping I can get some advice before I break something doing it caveman style.

Doing general maintenance, I decided to open all four valve covers to check if any adjustment was needed. Well three out of four where in spec, the rear exhaust needed a slight adjustment. OK all good, lets button her back up.

Nope.

Front exhaust lower valve cover will not lower down????? It spins and I can move it up and down about 1/4" but going down all the way it gets stuck on I assume the gasket. The intake had a similar issue but I was able to spin it until I found the spot and it went right down. If I try to put some force on it to get her to slide past the gasket, the upper cover starts to compress the spring and move down as well.

Talk to me fellas, how do I get this one cover closed?

I have had that problem in the past and what I did was put a little oil around the top of the cover and if that doesn't work you can also take a thin wire and push up between the two covers to move the gasket up.

Well I got it all done.

I decided when I got home to rotate the motor to maximize spring pressure on upper cover, all of a sudden the lower cover just slipped down!??!?!

Then the bottom cover did not want to screw onto tappet block!?!??! After 15 minutes I decided to rotate motor again to release spring pressure on top cover, screwed right on.

Never had that much trouble closing the valve covers before, but now I know changing the spring tension seems to help. The other three went back together as usual, go figure.

Saturday I had the bike on a local shops Dyno for carb tuning, that was an experience. Sitting on the Dyno shifting gears, waiting to ride the bike out the back of the Dyno room!?!?! 15 minutes got her all dialed in, rode home 20 miles purring like a kitten. Fuel air mixture per the computer was very different then my tune by ear, not that I am an expert but I was really off. Surprising since the bike was running OK, not great but OK for sure. As John says, tractor motor.

Maybe she goes to Harmony NJ this weekend.
