Don't know about where you are, but here in So. Cal. it wasn't all that easy. Numerous trips to the DMV and Highway Patrol plus letters from my local dealer and the MOCO. They built a bunch of these in the day and there are many parts out there. Google harley flathead.

In Canada I built 42WLA from parts brought from Europe. To register with ministry of transportation just engine
number was enough, 42WLAXXXXX, I had some phoney sales bill from Europe to back it up.
Originally there was no any factory vin number on the frame, later, after the war, frame vin numbers were required by some local authorities around the world.

Default Kewl Flatties

You are correct, pre 1969 the only vin# is on the engine boss, no frame numbers etc..
So to build one, land a flattie motor, get a single loop frma and your rolling..
But mind you, it would be best if the motor had a title, if not apply for a lost title, run the vin first, if its clean its good to go.. I do it all the time..Attached is a pic of the latest flattie I bought, a 1931 "V" BT 74 CI..,,,One of 2,675 made..
Need some info call me 619-888-2091 I be more than willing to share my expoeriences..ruben..
I also have 51 titled G motor..

Mine was WWII Army surplus and apparently they didn't stamp those so the Germans wouldn't know how many we had (That's my Dad's line anyway). So it's registered as a 1972 salvage with a DMV tag on the frame. SO when you get your engine case, make sure it's not like mine.

Harley made a lot of blank motor cases and at one time they were available from the dealers. You brought in your broken cases and they would transfer the old numbers to the new cases. Now (for the current bikes) you have to send the cases back to the factory and they will issue new cases with the old vin.

Talking Titles are no problem !!! I can!!

I found out the hard way, bought a 55G w/ out title, in Fl. its near impossible to get one!!! I did my home work ! I now have a LEGAL title, NOT SALVAGE, NOT ***. FROM PARTS, A HARLEY DAVIDSON TITLE!!!!!
Once you know how its pretty simple. It cost me about $350. , but was well worth it.
If you need help, i will be more than happy to assist you!! or any one else for that matter, provided that it is ABOVE THE BOARDS, I will help, because i love vintage bikes. They are the the heart of H/D & should live forever. I'd like to see what my 04 bagger looks like in 50 years?
Good Luck!! If you need, Message me !!!

Ruben, i think u r right. they want you to buy a new bike every 2 years or sooner if they can sell you one!!! I bought the 04 ultra w/ 12k miles from the owner for 10k cash, think i did pretty good, I've had it 1 year, now have 32kmiles on it. LOVE THE RIDE, but will never last 50 years like my 55g!!! Love my tired old iron!!!!
