Search Problem Update-IT'S WORKING
I would have been pulled off of the job by now.
I'd be lucky to have a job at all.
I still think it's a bandwidth issue. Just MY opinion.
Users just pound that search function causing tremendous throughput.
Does anyone know of other problems?
I don't see anything.
I've seen it, I've done it; just disable the search function and then decide how to handle the bandwidth problem.
Look at the v-twinforum, they require 20 seconds between searches.
It's obviously a problem for vtwin too.
I think this forum loses 75% of its appeal without the search function.
I hope they decide what to do soon before they lose too many users.
Remember, lose of users may just be slowed growth.
It would be interesting to know how there usageis being effected by this lose of functionality.
If I were the owners, I’d keep that quiet.
Payingadvertisers usually want a discount if the hits are down.
This is a great site; I hope they resolve whatever issues they have soon.
Good luck.
This thread was posted a week ago. How long before that were there issues? When I first started getting the complaints about this, it was because search was not finding posts made since the beginning of the year, and now it doesnt seem to find anything.
Does anyone recall when the 2008 posts started not showing up? How about when the search function crapped out altogether?
Thank you for the input everyone.
Terry
Sorry for the double post, but I have a question for those having troubles.

Is the problem technical?
Or, is the problem money?
I helped to manage a small commercial website once.
The website started to grow.
Suddenly, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) wanted more money to host the site.
A lot more money.
We promptly iqnored their request.
Then, they got us.
They put a limit on our bandwidth.
First, we limited each user on the number of pictures they could download.
That helped, but did not solve the problem during heavy usage times.
Then, we had to disable the search function.
That solved the problem.
We continued for almost a year, but the users didn't like that at all.
We started to see a significant decline in the number of users.
The bottom line is; we had to pay the ISP andincrease our ad rates.
Technical problems are usually pretty easy to solve with commercialsoftware.
So, Terry, is it money or technical?
I certainly don't enjoy the site as much without the search function.
" I have had a similar problem due to the rising cost of bandwidth, so I have made a contribution hoping this might help to solve the problem" Just my.02
As to everyone who is having problems, you have to understand that what is not working for some people is working for others just fine. We've had complaints about site speed, yet I am on this forum everyday for hours on end and have had ZERO problems..... whereas some cant even get on...
The fact is, that they have to troubleshoot more then just a few problems for everyone, not just you....
HDF is on an privately owned server network, and we dont have to pay for extra bandwidth...

If it IS a money/bandwidth problem, just say so and I am sure folks will help.
But, based on recent post, it appears Terry is right again, it's not.
It's not a money issue although contributions are always appreciated. As Patrick said in the post above your's, the normal fix is not working. It's a database problem (beyond my ability) and it's giving them fits. I'm sure they will get it going.
