Default Springer steering problem

I have a '95 FXSTS with 96000 miles on it. At a low speed the steering feels kind of heavy. On left hand turns it seems kind of clunky (hard to describe). Put new tires front and rear recently and changed the neck bearings about 2 years ago. Could it possibly be the bearings need to be adjusted?

I would check the neck bearing again. Lift the bike up and check the front end fall away.

Yes, maybe you have to change the bearings again! Try to lubricate andrelease some tension inthe neck bearings before...

a buddy of mine has a 95 FXSTSB and he was having problems with his steering, and I am pretty sure that what you decribe is very similiar to what he experienced, I'd do a fall away test as per the service manual and see what that tells you.

I have a 97 Badboy. I had read about maintenance on the front end, but my husband ('00 Road King) kept saying that "no- I had springs on the front". You know just not really listening. FINALLY, when he found everything loose after I kept complaining about it riding like it wasn't balancing going down the highway. He found the lower nut missing off one of the springs. Took it to the shop and the 30 year HD mechanic said it was the worse yoke bearings he had ever seen. I bought it with 25,000 miles on it. It has always been a problem in making short quick turns on it. Seemed like it would just dip over. After the spring's and the yoke bearings are repaired, will it be better. I love the bike and I've just always been mindful of making short quick turns. I am curious what you mean when referring to a fall away test. Sorry for the lengthy info. Sandra

Welcome to the forums santdriver...............the correct procedure per Harley-Davidson to adjust the steering head is called the fall-away procedure. This is outlined in any Harley service manual.
