Harley sells a tube of grease for the neck bearing, that's what I use, but I have seen bikes come out of the Harley service dept. with blue wheel bearing grease oozing out of the neck. I don't think it's too critical
Being a murphys law guy....I'd grab it from the dealer only for the reason of keeping the same crap in there and not mixing two types that could work against each other.
Granted youll probably pay 3 times the price, but at least you know it's the same stuff. Just my personal opinion.
My bearing greaser is always loaded up with Lucas red and tacky so that's the go to ... it's a Lisle Handy packer bearing packer... part # 34550 I think... I got mine at Sears back when we had Sears... but i'm pretty sure you can find them at Advanced Auto or at O Reilly's...seems to work the berries for all sortsa tapered bearings.... I use it for my Shovelhead, too... waaaaay better than squishing grease into the bearings by hand... although I love doing it like that, too...LOL... Of course you have to do more disassembly than some guys like to do, and then if you've got the self centering gizmo you gotta calibrate that , too... But I'm a big fan of bearing maintenance...LOL in case you couldn't tell....
I never minded filling up the bearings a couple times a year in my trailers.... b ut I'm not so sure i'd fill the neck tube with all that extra grease....There seems to be an awful lot of places it could just ooooze out and spatter on my uber clean fender, or drip on my pipes or squish out into the worst place it could at the worst time.???
The factory quit putting grease fittings on steering heads several years ago, which now forces people to actually inspect and service those bearings the correct way (or just do nothing).
None of my bikes have the grease fitting on the neck, and if they did I wouldn`t use it, because the grease does not service the bearings using that setup
Remove the steering stem from the steering head and inspect the bearings. If they are good they can be repacked, and you won`t be repacking those bearings with a bearing packing gizmo...
