Don't forget the FXRT's and 1986 FXRD's as well. They came with dual disks as an option.

The "Sturgis" model was designated FXB ( B for both...2 rubber belts). The motor company has offered that system a couple of times. Early eighties, and again in the early 90's.
The FXRD was an "upgraded" FXRT. That is to say....it had some features that made it a little closer to the touring "-glide" models of the day. I test rode both the FXRT and FXRD models in '85. Both had the hard shell bags. I don't think the RT had the tour pak behind the passenger seat. The RD had floorboards instead of pegs and if I remember correctly there were some added features in the fairing.
Hope this helps.
(btw: I ended up buying the FXRS in '85. Still riding it. I have yet to find a motorcycle I would rather have. )

No, whole new frame in 82 combined with 3 rubber mounts and 5 speed. Designed to attract riders who would be going to the strong Jap market at the time. The 82 FXR was was the first bike to be launched by the Harley 13 that bought the company back from AMF. The FXR stands alone! The HD Nova project in conjuction with Porche was under way in 81 which would have a liquid cooler engine in 3 forms, The FXRT introduced in 83 sported the fairing originally designed for the Nova, that fairing has a large following today and some predict we will see this in 2022 combined with the Low riderS . The Nova never came to market.

Interesting stuff there, was Eric Buell behind all of this at the time?

Yes, even though he was relatively new with Harley he did have input into the design of the frame and the refining the concept to make the FXR a riders motorcycle.

I got an FXR question and didnt want to start a thread, so id thought id ask here. i found a 1982 fxr for sale. there is no badge on the front fender but it has the hole for the commemorative badge... did all fxr bikes have the front fender hole in 82 or only commemorative bikes? is there any other way to tell if its a commemorative edition bike? thanks.
