Group rides these days are becoming like the "Running of the Bulls". I haven't been on one in years and won't but I wonder what it's attributed to. Is it lack of experience, squirrely riders, lack of organization, trying to impress, drunk etc
err, all of the above. I've never been on an organized HD ride and never will.
Mixed bag of folks with mixed skill levels is not my idea of a nice ride. Charities take donations even if you don't ride and you may live to donate again.
How exactly does the charity benefit from these rides?
Not casting doubt, just unsure how donations are actually made and received.
They rides are just a way to start people to donate. I'm sure someone figured out they get more money by offering a social gathering than just using mailers.
Hope all heal quickly, but as has been said I avoid those things like the plague.
Sad. No groups for me, unless it's the same 2-4 guys I've been riding with for years.
For charity or HOG stuff... I'll show up and donate to the cause (if it's a good one). I will look at the bikes, grab something to eat and maybe BS for a bit...
I then watch which way the pack goes... And I go the OTHER WAY.
Most charity rides I've seen, you either pay a flat fee to go on the ride or solicit donations from people to sponsor you to ride. If it's a toy run for kids the entry fee might be to donate a toy or two.
Any money that's left after paying advertising, expenses, etc. goes to the charity.
I prefer to just pay the entry fee, maybe go to the free pre-ride breakfast if they have one, then head anywhere except the ride route.
The speculation stating that because there were some who chose to self transport or left the scene without being checked out that they did something wrong was BS though.
Some people, (myself included) would rather not take a ride in an ambulance unless it's absolutely necessary. Then, you have to get your bike home somehow.
I do hope those who were hurt heal up real soon.
