Quite probably. I work for a charity, so I understand the thinking behind such an event. Charities depend for their very survival on basically the kindness of strangers. It's a constant struggle to get some sort of a snowball effect behind your actions to build the charity's profile - that can be as important as actual donations, particularly if the charity is quite small.
As the profile increases (due to the positive PR generated by a successful event) then more riders will want to go next time (hopefully) which will further build the profile (certainly) and lead to more donations (hopefully).
