Do you see the quotation marks? It does say that. Your reading it, but not understanding it. Comprehend!
Here is what you said:
"The study was conducted statewide by 80 law enforcement agencies who filled out a supplemental information sheet involving 8,262 motorcycle riders in collisions."
62 percent of motorcyclists involved in the 8262 collisions felt safe lane splitting.
What's their definition of safe?"
Please point me to where it said that in the article because this is what I read:
"Lane-splitting in California appears to be on the rise. The state Office of Traffic Safety study found 62 percent of motorcyclists say they lane-split on both freeways and other roads, a 7.5-percentage-point increase over 2013."
I'll spell it out for you. There is a link to the study in the article. Table seven of the study shows which of those motorcyclists involved in accidents were splitting.
6592 of those in the study were not splitting at the time of the accident. 1163 were splitting at the time of the accident. There were 426 passengers. It was unknown if 81 others were splitting or not.
That totals 8262. It was not 8262 lane splitters involved in accidents in the study.
There are two side bars in the article. One links the study and one links a separate survey that arrived at the 62 percent figure.
To those who lane split: Do you find that people do **** to try and impede your progress? Like swerving into your path or riding right on the line?
Yes I have experienced that. I have seen it done to riders and have seen the mirrors broken on vehicles. I've seen cars and trucks punched and kicked. I have a chp friend that worked hwy 1 out of Santa Cruz who said that they get calls from people being punched or hit in the face with wrenches and other objects.
Usually it's younger people that punch the gas pedal and make the car hop in your direction before stopping. They must be pissed because they are stopped in mile long backups and you are moving. Doesn't always work out to good for them.
I swear some people on this site would argue with a study done in California saying the world was round.
Well, look at it this way. Half a century has passed since I first started lane splitting in SoCal. And the dipshits just now figured out that it's "safe",if done "safely"? Not a lot of brain matter in that state. Glad I left.
I can see it now, the one time I'd attempt it, some jackass would open a door or make a sudden maneuver right in front of me causing me to go down. Now, I guess if you were just putting along through traffic it wouldn't be much of an issue but I feel once you do it enough like anything else you start pushing the limits a bit and moving a bit faster then you need to when splitting. But to be honest I don't feel one way or the other in terms of if it should be legal or illegal in Texas. If you feel the need by all means go for it, if not then don't.
