If you are going to use it for off road then you want one that has the "bread crumb" option. My Zumo 660 has it, my Tom Tom and smart phone do not.

That.

Otherwise known as tracks. For off road I use a Garmin 60CSX. There's a learning curve but once you have it down there's no more reliable a GPS. It acquires signal where others won't as well. Free maps (usually better than Garmin's) are available online.

I use a Garmin 2720 Street Pilot for road use. It has to be plugged into a 12v power source. Very easy to use and reliable. I plot routes on Mapsource. It's been great but looks like an old TV = old school.

I hear (never used one) the Garmin 660/665/590 are the best (and more modern version) of both worlds and then some (590 has a TPMS option, others - MP3, XM weather, hands free calling, but my cell phone and Senna do that too). Pricey. Double what you will pay for the other two together, but worth it if you want the latest and greatest.

I also have the Harley Davidson Infotainment GPS. It's pretty good and I like having it on the bike. It's expensive - somewhere between $22,000 - $38,000 - but they throw in a motorcycle with your purchase. Won't work on ATV trails.

I have the Road Tech Zumo 665. I got the 665 so I could also get the weather radar. It includes lifetime maps. And I can use it in my SUV as well. After one year I am happy with my choice. The $799 price is over the top though. I managed to get a discount and installed it myself. The installation on my FLHRC requires you to place the harness in the tray under the tank. So it takes a few hours to get it set up. Also the Road Tech version of the 665 GPS does NOT include a mount for the bars. So that's another $30-$40 bucks.

I am very pleased with my Garmin Zumo 600. Use Garmin base camp to develop custom routes and download to the Zumo. The motorcycke specific features are worth the extra $ to me.

Also, this has been brought up so many times. If you are planing to ride the beautiful scenery of our country, and not just go to Starbucks, don't depend on a smart phone. They need constant signal, and good bandwidth to load maps. That doesn't always happen. Such, was the case on our recent tour of the California coast. The attached screen shot was the navigation map on my iPhone at Big Sur, CA.

Apps like Garmin store maps locally and do not require cell tower or wifi.

Bad Elf makes some products that enhance a phone's GPS btw.
