Another vote for Road King.

You can go bare bones or load it up for the long haul if needed.

2 bikes in one!

Default Second the Road King

I had a 2013 Limited and an 04 Sportster and really liked them both. I rode the Limited for rides of any distance, but enjoyed the Sporty for zipping around and a more pure riding experience. With 30,000 miles on the Limited and time for more tires, major service and the warranty running out I decided to get a new bike. I am an electronic dinosaur and have never shared other's enthusiasm for gadgets, so I decided to get a new '14 road King. Some people said, "You're stepping down?" I liked the classic looks, reflex anti-lock brakes, new bags, beefier front end with less front end weight and less plastic.
I picked up the new King just before Sturgis and have logged about 7,000 miles now. I have concluded it was the right choice for me. The bike does everything I ask if it well, is just about as comfortable and provides a much more satisfying pure motorcycle feel. And, I find now that I never ride the Sporty anymore, don't have to. The King is a great all around bike and works great for me. Anybody want to buy a Sporty?

I would also say that the Softail Slim seems like a good conpromise. I, too, I prefer a more bare-bones, bobber look. I bought a Sportster 48 as my first bike, but I did take a long look at a Softail Slim they had at the dealership and decided if the model was still around in 4-5 years, I could see myself buying one.

Oh well, that didn't quite work out like I planned.

Anyway, I take the land yacht all over; around the corner, down the highway, over the lake to work most days. It's the first HD I've owned after riding for quite some time and I treated myself to something pretty special. It's got a low shield so I can feel the wind, and the wife really enjoys the comfortable ride. And man, let me say, it's something else out on the interstate heading between towns. Would I like to have something else that's just pure bike to play around on? Sure. But, if I only get to have one bike (and I do for now), this is the bike for me!

Another Touring guy has to slam a Softail, lol. I've owned 2 Tourers, a FXR, a Dyna and 3 Softails. Never bought one because it handled so well in the curves. I do 200 mile/day rides on the weekend & 1 or 2 long trips a year. Anywhere fom 3000 to 5000 miles each. My current FB works for me. Brings me back to the 50s & 60s. I like the stripped down look and though it might seem strange, I like the wind & don't need a radio, GPS, or an ugly fairing. An RK is a nice bike. I've owned one. Just never bonded with it, but I have seen some nice bare bone ones.
