Checked all that new solenoid was just bought relay good changed it with a new one that I know works still don't have a clue? I did everything that the service book said to do but pull the cover.
Do I have this correct? - With the cover off and the start button pushed - relay pulls in the solenoid, solenoid pulls the Bendix, but when the Bendix/starter gear engages the ring gear, everything comes to a halt, as in the starter quits turning. If so, two things are starter is bad, or battery is bad. If the starter continues turning even tho the gears are engaged and not turning, then the starter clutch ***'y is hosed. About the only thing else is an alignment problem due to a bad bearing or bushing.
Recently finished a minor make-over on an '87 FLST. Prior to tearing the bike down, it was having minor starter problems when things got hot after a ride, especially. After getting things back together, the first time to start the solenoid hung, fried the battery-to-solenoid cable, and caused a shorted cell in the battery. I replaced the solenoid (Accel), battery (Throttle-X), all battery/starter cables, and bit the bullet on a new starter since old Hitachi starter parts of good quality are getting scarce, and I never knew if what I was getting was a good part or a piece of poorly reverse-engineered crap. Starter was this one: All-***** High Torque part # 17069 1.4KW instead of the Hitachi's .8 KW. Smaller (shorter) and doesn't require the end support. Also can be mounted in several orientations so the terminal will clear most any oil tank, etc.

The battery is good. When the bendix is engaged it starts turning then quits turning. The starter turns strong. I'm new to the Harley thing not new to bikes I was told that no one likes that year of bike because of the different type of problems with that range of years I have nothing in the bike it's all stock. It just needs alittle to and a front fender.

Caution: make sure the battery is disconnected before you put your hands on that gear, because if you pull it out toward the ring gear, the starter will be energized, even with the ignition switch off.

Thanks Dan you beat me to it. I had a friend loose a few fingers when he pulled the starter gear forward by hand. Disconnect the battery!
