Default accessory power port

I have a 2001 Electra Glide which has a cigarette lighter/plug on the left side of the fairing. The cigarette lighter works fine, but when I use the port to run a GPS it pops the in line fuse on the gps. I have tried 3 different gps's we have and everyone is the same, the fuses either pop or on one the wire got super hot and actually started melting, but not once did the fuse on the bike trip. Is this port not to be used as auxiliary power?

The cig lighter is not necessarily wired to accept some accessories. Add a port or upgrade the wiring and fuse to cig lighter.

Thanks. Looking online at a few tonight, seems easy enough to add.

The cigarette lighter port should be enough to run your GPS--most Garmin GPS' only take 5A and the fuse is a 15A fuse.

I had a similar problem with the fuse always blowing and I kept a pack of spare 15A fuses in my tool kit. Then I finally figured out why it was blowing: When turning the bars to full-left lock, the plug that went into the receptacle was hitting the tank and moving it enough to short out.

You may want to see if this is happening first. Not sure why your wires would be getting that hot though.

Just re-read and saw that it was the in-line fuse: Some people have reported that their cigarette lighter socket was wired with the polarity backwards and could cause these issues. No problem with a cigarette lighter as it's supposed to heat up; major problem with electronics.

If you have a multi-meter and can get to the backside of the outlet or if your lead is long enough to fit inside the outlet, the wire going to the tip should be positive (one lead from multi-meter to tip wire, the other to metal ground on bike should give 12V).

I would have to agree, a cig lighter will take quite a bit more amps than a GPS unit. Look into the wiring.

As Mike M said, check the polarity of the lighter socket.
