I was going to cut the wire on the cigaretter lighter end of my power source and wire into the backside (behind the fairing) of the bikes cigaretter lighter.
First I opened up the male end and looked inside.
There are little transistors and electrical stuff inside.
So Im thinking this may not be a good idea.
So how did you do it?
I followed the advise given here on the Zumo forum and wired in a lighter plug from West Marine. That way I can just remove the unit, mount and all. Works great.
There is a plastic wire connector beside the radio that has power to it. \\; It also has a ground in it. \\; All you have to do is use 2 male spade connectors. \\; This is where HD has you connect the power for one of there GPS units. \\; I have used this without issue on two different bikes. \\; It is switched so it turns the GPS of when you turn the switch off.
your Garmin GPS runs on \\;just under 5 volts, hence the electrical gadgets in the male socket. Leave the socket in place and hard wire in under the fairing a lighter socket to plug into. Just a thought.
I just added spade male connectors and plugged right into the extra wires on the headlight wiring harness. They are for Aux lights. \\;\\\\\\;There is a red cap over the positive. very easy and works fine. Make sure you keep the 2 amp fuse in-line.
